About Us

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Sierra Foundation to unite the global communities through interfaith dialogue by sharing the differences in cultures and religions in an effort to achieve world peace in the foreseeable future. Living and working together in diversity is a challenge. Religious beliefs and differences in cultures can sometimes harness deep emotions, sometimes taking destructive forms. In order to build a better future, the Sierra Foundation will work hand in hand with other communities and groups that recognize the same mission.

Sierra Foundation Overview

Founded in 2004 by a group of Reno residents, mostly of Turkish background, Sierra Foundation was created to help establish a better society where individuals love, respect and accept each other as they are regardless of religion, race, or culture.

We believe that interfaith dialogue activities are among the most critical efforts to foster peaceful and two-way communication among followers of different religions. Moving from the premise that 'man is enemy of what he does not know,' interfaith dialogue activities attempt to initiate a process of knowing and acknowledging the others. This dialogue is build upon the fact that all faiths and religions in essence serve a very essential need of mankind to reach the source of good in order to live a meaningful life. Thus, interfaith dialogue efforts seem to be serving the essential function when they are framed as "points of connection" among different religions and ideals. At these points of connection, each faith or religion become elements of a common ground for an encompassing conception of good and peace, which in a way signifies God's blessings.

Particularly, our efforts of interfaith dialogue are based on the idea that love is the essence of creation and the universe is a manifestation of God's compassion and love toward His creatures. Therefore, we should love and respect others due to our connection to the creator. As Fethullah Gulen states, a prominent Turkish scholar and thinker, "loving in God's way" describes this love. God created all humanity as noble and we believe that treating each and every human being with dignity is a way of life shaped by the belief in God and his compassion.
